THIS YEAR, GROWERS ARE LOOKING FORWARD TO BRINGING IN A BUMPER CROP. A WELCOME RELIEF AFTER LAST YEAR’S DEEPLY DISAPPOINTING SEASON. OETA’S CATHY TATOM HAS THE STORY FROM CREEK COUNTY. THE SKIES MAY BE DREARY AND GREY, BUT THERE’S A SUNNY OUTLOOK IN OKLAHOMA’S PECAN ORCHARDS AS THE HARVEST GETS UNDERWAY. Bob Knight/Pecan Grower: “The quality really looks good now.” QUANTITY LOOKS EXCEPTIONALLY GOOD TOO ACCORDING TO BOB KNIGHT. HE’S PRESIDENT OF OKLAHOMA’S PECAN GROWER’S ASSOCIATION. HE SAYS OUR STATE IS THE NATION’S FOURTH LARGEST PRODUCER OF PECANS. AND THIS YEAR, OKLAHOMA’S MORE THAN 400 PECAN GROWERS EXPECT TO HARVEST MORE THAN TWICE THE NUTS THEY WERE ABLE TO IN 2008. Bob Knight/Pecan Grower: “This year the crop estimate is 22 million pounds and our average is from year to year is 20 million pounds.” Bob Knight/Pecan Grower: “Last year was less than ten million pounds.” GROWERS BLAME THAT DISMAL HARVEST ON TREES HEAVILY DAMAGED BY THE 2007 ICE STORMS. Bob Knight/Pecan Grower: “Parts of the state still have damage from the ice storm.” KNIGHT SAYS DEPENDING ON SEVERITY OF DAMAGE IT TAKES ONE TO FIVE
