Question by : How do I avoid copyright infringement if the movie I’m making has characters using specific types ofcomputers?
I’m making a movie that revolves around 5 characters using computers and cell phones to communicate. I’m worried about lots of things, like the appearance of a particular operating system and showing brand names on monitors/computer tower. Also I want them to use chat and social networking sites. What about basic programs like Microsoft word? Could I film someone typing in word, but just not show the “Microsoft Word” title/logo? Would I be able to get away with them using things like AIM and FaceBook as long as I don’t show the words “AIM” and “Facebook”? If I’m not able to use those programs at all, then what are my options? Would I need to somehow create my own chat programs and social networking sites? What about the general recognizable appearance of the Windows operating system? Would that be an issue?

You can just use Linux, which is free and not-copyrightable.
