Question by chapstick: Why is the new karate kid movie not even about karate? What do you all think?
it’s not even about karate!!

It’s about kung fu…. and they even talk about kung fu in the trailer. the style is kung fu. and jackie chan does kung fu. not karate. i dont even think he knows karate. This takes place in CHINA. where is karate from? OKINAWA.
this movie makes no sense. and it is culturally flawed. it’s like saying all Asians are the same. when there are 56 different Asian countries, each with different cultures. I took a class in sociology focusing on race and ethnicity and there isn’t 1 think that ties all 56 countries together. besides being in ASIA. [and don’t say they all eat rice. everyone eats rice..]

idk. i dont think they should have named this karate kid. those are some big shoes to fill. what the original karate kid did for the audience of its time was great. this new KUNG FU kid doesn’t seem like anything special.

this isn’ tsomething i’d pay to see. I think if they didn’t call it karate kid, it would be alright. but since it has the ‘karate kid’ title it makes me hold it at a high standard.

i’m just disappointed because this doesn’t even have to do with karate, when they’re trying to remake an 80s classic like “karate kid’ the original. And how ignorant Hollywood is being because of this. I can’t believe this is socially acceptable in our country. We call any Asian martial art ‘KARAWTEE” when karate is okinawan.

What does everyone else think?
I understand the story is the same. new kid on the blcok, gets beat up, fights back, etc etc.

but its not KARATE kid. its KUNG FU kid. at least it should be..

Yes, it’s just Hollywood being cutsy. So many movies misportray martial arts.
