Why is it that when I play a full screen game or video, while also on the internet, my computer crashes?

Question by : Why is it that when I play a full screen game or video, while also on the internet, my computer crashes?
A while back I was playing a game in full screen, when suddenly my computer starts making a really loud staticy noise and there was nothing left on the screen but bright green color. I had to sit there and wait a few minites for it to shut off on it’s own because none of the keys or the mouse wouldn’t respond. At first I just thought it was the game I was playing, so I reinstalled it, but my computer crashed again. Surfice it to say that I since stopped playing that game.

Then about a week after that incident, I was watching a movie on Netflix in full screen when it happened again. Since it happened with a game that in no way had anything to do with Netflix watch instantly I thought that it had to be my computer, so I looked up what the symtems of grafics card malfunctions look like and they didn’t really fit so I figured that my computer was probably overheating. Still a no go, cause even with the laptop holder with a cooling fan attached didn’t help the crashing issue, even though it keeps my laptop markably cooler and I love that and still use the fan regardless.

By then I was having withdrawls from my game and I reinstalled it, this time I set the game to windowed mode and it worked fine, for a while. After a week of playing the game with no complications the crashing started again. Now it was around that time that I discovered that if I disconected from my wi fi that the game and any dvd I played would work in full screen mode with out crashing. Success, but it was a bittersweet victory because the game looses a lot of features when played offline.

Well crap, that sucks, but I can still play my fill with out internet connection anyway cause I’m a loner like that. However, there is more. Resently my computer was plagued by a virus so I had to revert it to factory settings. My, my if all that crashing was a glitch somewhere deep within the scattered files of my C: drive surely the problem could have been fixed by going back to factory settings.

WRONG!

I am thankfull for any and all answers, but before you do answer keep in mind that I only know the basics of computer ownership and don’t know how to translate complicated programing speak, thank you.

This is a very strange predicament indeed. It sounds like the power supply, maybe. If you are using a laptop and disable the wireless on the laptop, then the power to your wireless card is cut into a small portion.

Try taking your computer in and getting a better power supply installed.

If not, then it might just be that the WiFi thing was a coincidence, and that you are having the problem nonetheless.

Make sure you turn your game down all the way to the lowest settings, and during a Netflix movie, try reducing the screen size and see if the problem occurs again.

I had a problem similar to this before, my computer would randomly black out after I bought a new graphics card and installed it. Obviously, I was going to believe it was the graphics card, but alas it was the power supply. My wimpy 300W power supply was not enough to handle everything that was already in the computer along with the new graphics, so it started shutting things down that shouldn’t be, causing blackouts.
