Why do women in movies always play a sexy or beautiful character?

Question by hantonkate: Why do women in movies always play a sexy or beautiful character?
It is no secret that the film industry wants beautiful people to play in their movies. However, men are some times excused from that. They often play not as attractive characters and their talent is in my opinion noticed even more. So why do women always have to be attractive or sexy and be at the side of a man? Why can’t people make movies about independent women who are not necessarily beautiful but are strong and don’t have to have a man by their side? I personally think that if that factor was changed we could see a lot more impressive performances from actresses.

Simple. The movie going public doesn’t support movies like that. AKA–they don’t make money. Fair, no. Realistic, yes
