What’s a good video/movie editing software/program?

Question by xcaiusxcassiusx: What’s a good video/movie editing software/program?
I’m making an independent film, an old school horror-slasher flick. Nothing big, just something about 40, 45 minutes long. I want to give it a look that will make people think they’re watching a 1970s horror film. Something that I can change the video’s colors, volume structures, etc. I don’t want to use Movie Maker, so please don’t suggest that.

Windows Movie Maker is the best free choice, but if your willing to spend a little bit for a better product I recommend Ulead Video Studio, Adobe Premiere Elements or Sony Vegas. You can even download a free fully functional trial of these products to see which one will meet your needs the most.
