I’ve never seen that movie, but if you are going digital computer recording, your budget could fall between $ 1,500 and $ 20,000.

Assuming you have an up-to-date, semi-fast computer:
If you’re looking to do personal acoustic/vocal type recording with no live drums, you can get a simple Tascam interface for around $ 300 and comes with the software and VST effects. Then you’ll buy a few instrument mics and 1 good vocal mic with stands, totaling about $ 500. Reference monitors for $ 300, a few preamps and effect toys, and you can create acoustic demos.

Here’s what my studio is set up like. If that movie you’re talking about is a fully equiped pro-recording studio, these are some of the things you should buy:
8″ reference monitors with 10″ sub, dual monitor setup with fast PC with Cubase. Twin Firepods for 16 channel simultaneous recording, snake to separate sound proofed performance room, headphone amp with 5 AKG studio headphones, 7 peice drum mic set, 5 Shure instrument mics, 2 AKG vocal mics, Pod Pro and other rack effects.

For recording whole bands and producing albums, look to be spending about $ 8,000 minimum
