What horror movies left a lasting impression?

Question by Rexy: What horror movies left a lasting impression?
Everyone who watches horror movies has at one point seen a movie that left them with something. Maybe it was a really terrible movie, but had some horrifying creature that you couldn’t get out of your head. Maybe it was an average movie with some mundane moment that inexplicably made your skin crawl. Maybe it was an eerily well done film and every minute of it has stuck with you ever since. I’m just looking to find what different things have jarred people even just slightly.

For example I have a few movies that have left impressions on me. One of them was Ernest Scared Stupid (ridiculous, I know, but I was VERY young and have not watched it since). I was afraid to go to the bathroom alone for six years simply because of a scene where a troll shows up unexpectedly in the bathroom. I am a horror movie buff and not really much effects me, but I recently bought that movie and I’ve been putting off watching it again for two weeks.

For a better example, there’s a moment in The People Under the Stairs that just makes me cringe. For those of you who haven’t seen the movie I’ll run through the basics of this scene. There’s a family, a mother, father, and daughter. Father and mother are very controlling/crazy. Mother makes a dress for her daughter, pure white. A burglar breaks in and I believe the father shoots him. The mother grabs the girl by the arm, throws her a mop and bucket and pushes her down in the bloody mess of the floor, telling her to clean it up and resulting in the dress being dirtied and stained. A few moments later the mother returns and is very upset to see her daughters dress ruined and her daughter filthy. She draws the daughter a bath, straight hot water and pushes the daughter into the scalding water, dress and all. Nothing amazing, but at that moment where the girl hits the water I just can’t stand it.

Other than that I think that Sam Raimi knows me all too well. In his first Evil Dead when the Deadite is locked in the cellar and popping out (terrible makeup, terrible costume, terrible effects for todays audience). I actually get frightened, same with his second Evil Dead, though Army of Darkness has too many comedic elements to do the same. Also his new movie Drag Me to Hell makes me cringe and squirm every time I see that nasty old lady.

Sorry, I know that was long, just trying to explain, please do the same in as much or as little detail as you like. Thanks.
