What are your top ten gaming consoles of all time and why?

Question by Vincent Joe: What are your top ten gaming consoles of all time and why?
Here’s my list (handhelds are not included…)

1) NINTENDO ENTERTAINMENT SYSTEM – The ‘Phoenix’. The rebirth of gaming, rising from the ashes of the 1983 console crash, the NES is the reason gaming is the billion dollar, pop culture industry it is today.

2) SONY PLAYSTATION 2 – Gaming aint for kids anymore 🙂 A valid step towards a central entertainment hub, the PS2’s popularity pushed software developers to create some of the most groundbreaking games of all time (yes GTA 3, I’m looking at you)

3) MICROSOFT XBOX 360 – Online is king. Proving Microsoft invested in what matters most, gamers put up with a loud, clunky system, and the dreaded ‘red ring of death’, in order to ‘pwn’ their buddies on Xbox Live. Non-gamers loved how easy it was to stream movies or ‘Kinect’ with friends (get it?) Playstation fans, get ready to hate.

4) NINTENDO 64 – Though it lost in the console war against the Sony Playstation in terms of sales, as the years go on, the N64 has seem to become more and more revered by the gamers who know. Being the first console to host an analog stick, rumble controller and camera control, the N64 not only pushed gaming hardware but also played host to software game-changers like ‘Goldeneye’ and ‘Ocarina of Time’.

5) NINTENDO WII – Love it or hate it, now your grandma can play video games 🙂 With it’s gamble on a motion controller, the Wii will be seen as a huge shift in gaming culture as time goes on…

6) SONY PLAYSTATION – 3rd party love by Sony help sustain a stale gaming industry. Throw in low prices for consumers and you have the making of a system that toppled a giant. Gaming wasn’t seen in the same limelight ever again.

7) ATARI 2600 – The godfather of video games, the 2600 brought TRUE gaming to households for the first time ever . Though in most cases you were a ‘square’ shooting at a ‘triangle’, Atari planted the seed for what we consider the gaming industry today. Pity, they almost killed it too…

8) SUPER NINTENDO ENTERTAINMENT SYSTEM – Like the Playstation 2, the SNES seemed to be THE console for games to develop on at the time. Pre-rendered graphics, FX chips and a lot of RPG love (not to mention being the first console to boast the now beloved shoulder buttons) all helped to make the SNES keep up the Nintendo pedigree.

9) SEGA GENESIS – The first ‘cult’ system, the Genesis brought an aura of ‘bad ***’ to the gaming world. Being the first console to showcase 16 bit graphics (at a time when bit #’s mattered) the Genesis played host to a gaming library of rebels and outcasts. Gaming’s squeaky clean image was ruined for the better.

10) MICROSOFT XBOX – ‘Halo’ changed the world of online console gaming. Xbox made it possible. ‘nough said.

Honorable Mentions:

SEGA DREAMCAST and Sony PLAYSTATION 3 – Both ahead of their time.
