With a plasma or LCD HD TV, there are a number of options available for you to watch HD movies in the UK from a variety of sources. A huge wall-mounted HD TV set isn’t the only option for watching HD TV, there are a number of much lower cost options available for consideration. By using the existing resources it’s possible to watch HD TV on your computer at bargain prices.

For less than 220, a brand-new wide-screen computer monitor with an HD TV tuner built-in is a wise investment. The Samsung T200HD 20-inch computer monitor (left) HD TV PAL tuner that is set up for UK PAL format, can receive off-the-air HD, cable or broadband QAM, and has 2 HDMI inputs for Blu-Ray, XBox, or similar game system. With 1080p scanning, HD TV is breath-taking. It also has S/PDIF (TOSLINK) digital audio output to connect with either a computer or home theatre receiver. By the way, it also connects to the computer. There is literally no need for a fancy graphics card, internal or external tuners.

There are a number of sources of HD TV-compliant peripherals with DVI – that’s the same format as HDMI, it’s just a different style of connector. The larger connector on most graphics cards – generally orange – is the DVI connector. It is used for directly connecting to the monitor/HD TV to the computer. One of the HDMI connectors could be connected to a home theatre receiver. This provides all of the options connected to the receiver, including DVD, Blu-Ray, XBox, broadband cable or fibre optics, off-the-air analogue and digital TV – including HD TV channels – Pay-Per-View (PPV) services such as BT Vision HD, Sky HD, Virgin Media HD, Freesat HD – the joint venture of BBC and ITV which offer 130 free channels – and Freeview, which is scheduled for operation in 2012.

BT Vision Fibre Optic Network

Of special note, BT Group, plc – formerly British Telecommunications, BritTelecom, et al. – is undergoing massive construction of a full-blown Fibre To The Cabinet (FTTC) and Fibre To The Premises (FTTP) network. Initially planning 1.5 million broadband FTTP installations, that number has been nearly doubled to 2.9 million. A similar expansion of the FTTC network plans 9.5 million installations. This system should start going live in early 2010.

HD Packages in the UK

The prices of services offering HDTV and HD content vary widely, depending on bandwidth and speed in the case of broadband and bundling services makes breaking out the cost of HD a chore. The access prices decrease as competition increases and with BT Group plans, the prices of PPV should plummet. The secret is to shop wisely and not get locked into a long-term contract.
