Video Making/Editing Software..? Suggestions..?

I make videos with my movies I rip off of my dvds and use to use Windows Movie Maker but it doesn’t work well anymore for some reason..:S Anywaiz, I am hoping to buy a maker which is easy enough to use and works well. I have downloaded Sony Vegas but it is way complicated so I am either asking for suggestions or maybe somebody can give a quick tutorial with Sony Vegas because everytime I put my music on the timeline I can’t see it and it disappears. And my clips just like turn in to only the sound and no video. And I don’t know how to add other sound from the movie to the timeline as sound so you can hear both the music and sound. And the video effects…?? I don’t even know where they are. And how to slow clips down..?
Anywaiz, Please give me suggestions or if you can explain Sont Vegas really good then that would be great! Thanks for all of you’re help for whoever answers. (:
