Raise The Titanic Film Model – 1979 To 2006

Here is a selection of images from my ‘Raise The Titanic’ collection showing the huge 55ft Titanic model, from its early production stages in 1979, through the making of the movie, into the late 1980s, through the 90s, to 2006 and the models sorrowful current state. The model still resides outside the backlot film studio in Malta. The model was briefly placed in storage for a year in 1981, just after the film was released in the cinamas. After the film flopped in the cinamas, and with Lew Grade ITC being taken over by administration, the film model (or film prop) was dumped back outside and left to deteriorate. Costing a staggering £3million to build in 1979, the Titanic model was to be re-used for other projects, along with the model subs and navel vessels. However, with the film foundering, it was considered bad luck to use the model. Over the years, parts from the model have been removed/taken by either film companies/visitors for use in other projects or for film collectors The model was briefly used in a German filmed drama in 1990 about WWI. A film crew repainted the Starboard side of the Titanic model to represent her tragic sister BRITANNIC and filmed at a distance for night shots. The model continued to stay outside through the remainder of the 90s and early 2000s. Attempts have been made to purchase the model by Titanic related socities and Titanic historians, but the film studios do not own the model itself. This belongs to those who took over from ITC in 1981
