Q&A: Stay at Home Moms: why do you do it? on a bad day, what keeps you going?

Question by ..: Stay at Home Moms: why do you do it? on a bad day, what keeps you going?
so far today my (usually well behaved) son has stuffed crayons into the radiator which melted them to the carpet below, refused to nap, refused to eat, refused to use the toliet, refused to pick up his toys, hit me, peed on his time-out chair, climbed onto the only tall furniture that he isn’t allowed to climb onto, stripped himself naked and peed all over his bedroom when I tried to convince him to take a nap, and screamed for his father when I wouldn’t give him junk food — all out of character behaviors, however he is entering the terrible two’s age soon and he’s been having problems with his teething lately as well

his behavior would have managable if all I had to worry about was him, however I have loads upon loads of clean laundry that are just sitting in a pile needing to be folded and put away, I have a kitchen floor covered in grease and flour and a kitchen sink full of dishes from last nights dinner that didn’t get cleaned up before bed because my husband wanted my “attention” after dinner, I have bags upon bags of groceries that just got delievered to my front door step, and I have a nappy cake that I need to finish and mail out ASAP if I want to get paid for having made it.

Also, its like murphy’s law when it comes to my family’s big dinner tonight: I have a leg of lamb that was supposed to have gone into the slow cooker 4 hours ago! I’ve had to use my new manual hacksaw to cut the end of the bone off because it was too large for my slow cooker, then I couldn’t find a corkscrew anywhere in the house so after spending over an hour trying to get the wine open without a corkscrew, I finally just subsitituted juice, which I know is going to wreck the taste

I’m crying, I haven’t accomplished anything on my to-do list for the day, the house is still a massive pigsty, I have no idea what alternative to make for dinner since the lamb will not be done in time to feed people

What is the point?
Why do mothers kill themselves to make everyone else around them happy?

On days like today, I loose track of why I even bother trying…
Today was supposed to be my one day to stay home this week, the rest of the week he has toddler classes, play groups, activities…
Today was supposed to be my day to clean the house and just play cars with him, maybe finger paint or watch a disney movie if it rained…a nice relaxing day to start what is going to be a stressful and busy week…
Guess thats what I get for attempting to plan ahead

I’m sorry you’re having a bad day. Life’s messy and plans rarely work out. Put on a movie for your baby, soak your dishes in detergent, and take a bubble bath or something else that relaxes you. After you calm down ONLY do what NEEDS to be done and hide the laundry so it doesn’t stress you out to look at it because it can wait another day. Screw the lamb, make spaghetti with sauce in a jar. We all bite off more than we can chew sometimes and we need to remember to give ourselves a break. I’m sure by the end of the day your boy and/or husband will do something that makes you think ‘Aha! This is why we do it.’ There’s nothing wrong with asking for a little help too. Hope the rest of your day goes better.
