Q&A: My TV is 720p yet my PS3 detects it at 1080p. Is it really displaying at 720p or 1080p?

Question by Solid Snake: My TV is 720p yet my PS3 detects it at 1080p. Is it really displaying at 720p or 1080p?
I have a 37″ Olevia 237T HDTV that is supposed to 1366 X 768, running at 480i, 480p, 720p, and 1080i. Yet, when I reset my PS3 and it auto-detects my TV, it says it detects a 1080p TV.

I understand the difference between 720p and 1080p on a 37″ is undetectable by the human eye (or very close to it) so it really doesn’t make too much difference, but I suppose my main question is this.

What happens if my PS3 plays a 1080p movie or game on a set that is only 720p/1080i? Will the TV auto-convert it to 1080i or 720p? Or will it try to display it at 1080p? I downloaded 2 movie trailers of the same movie – one at 720p and one at 1080p and could not tell the difference.

Thoughts?

It looks the same if I change the Video Output Settings to 1080p, 1080i or 720p. It doesn’t look crappy at all on any of the settings.
PS3 does not detect all TV’s as 1080p. I just hooked up my older brother’s PS3 and it detected his 720p (1080i) as a 1080i.
I just realized that my tv has a status/display window that shows what resolution the channel/input is showing at. Like when it’s showing HD over-the-air TV, it says 1080i. When I check the status during a Blu-Ray movie, the TV says it’s displaying 1080p.

it is showing a 720P depiction of 1080P. Which is worse than if you simply go to settings and select 720P.
