Hi – There are quite a few free video editing tools out there:-
Vivia
Wax
Jahshaka
Blender
VirtualDub
etc.
There are Mac based ones as well:
Hyperengine- AV
iMovie
And some of these even work on Linux!
Some of these are simple and easy to learn (VideoSpin, for example), others are quite complex but harder to learn (Blender). However they will pretty much all do what you want.
The link below will take you to a site that details each of these, along with which formats they support (avi, mov, mpg ect.), talks about the pro’s and con’s and gives links to their sites for downloading.
