Q&A: Make an amateur film look more professional?

Question by Kelly Ann: Make an amateur film look more professional?
I have a regular video camera and I’m really interested in film making, but it’s hard to get started when it’s just you with an average camera. I don’t want my movies to look like a school project, you know like where it zooms in really fast then kinda gets shaky, and the lighting is horrible and it’s filmed in all one scene.
I was just wondering if anyone had any tips on making a more professional looking movie?

Always use a tripod, there is nothing worse than shaky video, and steady footage makes a huge difference.
Start with a small, simple project. Write a detailed script. Plan out every single segment of it – the angle, the light, the timing, the action, the zoom/pan, etc.

For each segment, consider doing more than one angle (i.e. repeat the same scene in different ways), then later on decide which one fits best. Always add an extra second or two at the beginning before any action starts and again at the end before you press “stop” to allow for transitions in post production.

Design title and credit pages and add them to your movie.

If at all possible, add sound/narration via a good quality mic in post production. Add background music if appropriate.

There you go…… a few hints for starters. You could also simply google the topic, there are oodles of tutorials available for you to learn from.
