Q&A: Is Adobe monopolizing the industry?

Question by lorddonk: Is Adobe monopolizing the industry?
What are your thoughts and views on paid software, in particular; Adobe?

Starting out as an industry newcomer there is no way to shell out thousands of dollars for the Adobe software suite which costs well over a thousand dollars!

Any entrepreneur would generally apply for a loan for their new business but banks aren’t adept to offering a loan for purchasing a software package.

One alternative is to make do with freeware substitutes. The Gimp package is still far behind but a close replacement for Photoshop. Komposer can be used as a simplified Dreamweaver, but again it doesn’t come anywhere close to its Adobe cousin. Windows users can use Windows Movie Maker to work with video, but we can’t do anything more advanced than applying text over the video, -again we need Adobe and is Premier Pro or After Effects software.

Is Adobe a monopoly? Or do you consider it “just business?” Adobe bought out Macromedia the only competitor it had, and is now only competing against the far behind Microsoft, a monopoly of its own.

Please do not discuss illegal alternatives here, this is a discussion on whether Adobe is bullying the design software industry.
