Q&A: How to add subtitles to an AVI video?

Question by TobiesReiper: How to add subtitles to an AVI video?
I am making a parody of a movie and I would like to add my own subtitles to it. I have never done this before and my current video editor does not allow you to add any subtitles to any video. I would like to know how to add your own subtitles into an avi video. Like a program (freeware if possible since Im cheap.)

Its not a free program, however Final Cut Studios program, DVD Studio Pro does a great job with Subtitles and very easy with a little knowledge. Otherwise, you will can just add basic text at the bottom of the screen with nearly any editor. By the way, Yellow subtitles are the easiest to read however white look better, if you use white, I suggest you put a little opaque grey box behind the area you are putting text. This makes it easier to read.
Good luck
