Characteristics, talents, education, training, college degree, special skills, main courses, and other stuff that are required and helpful for being a director. Also schools that concentrate on film making and movie directing. Any info that could help me. I wanna know what it takes, what it means to be a directing. Also, what directors do an a daily basis and how their lives are. ALSO, a career discription would be AWSOME!! Websites would help a lot and any personal info that anyone knows. THANKS

Oh my God, you’re kidding right?
Why do you need to know by friday, are you directing a film friday?

I’m a director/writer/composer/actor/editor, & although I’ve directed one feature film & several shorts, I still am not making my living at it, so be forewarned; it’s one of the toughest gigs to get into. It would be easier to get into brain surgery, or be a successful stock broker, so you’ll have to excuse my sarcasm, it’s extremely difficult to do, even harder to do well, and even harder to ever get paid for doing it.

There are tons of websites. Try to avoid the “fan” type websites.
Type “film school” & other strings into a search engine, & you’ll get a million URL’s.
I frequent & post on www.cinematography.com a lot (for cinematography info).
Remember; Speilberg didn’t go to film school. Take classes at your closest junior college first, even if you go to film school, because they charge an arm & a leg at film schools.

Skills;
The more you know about all the different disciplines, the better, but it takes years;
Writing, cinematography, acting, editing, music, sound FX, set design, art directing, producting management, producing, financing… etc.
The most important thing, as far as “getting a directing gig” is going to be writing.
I mean, nobody is going to throw millions (or even thousands) of dollars your way to make a movie, just because you “think” you can direct, or that you have “a great idea for a movie”
Yeah, who doesn’t.
You have to have a GREAT script, & make the right connections. And damn near nobody writes a great script their first time.
I’ve written 5, and I can honestly say, only one of them is really good (I thought they were all brilliant when I was writing them, of course), and I haven’t been able to get anyone to throw money at it (yet). I just went ahead and shot one of my scripts, finished it, but couldn’t sell it, because I had no stars in it.
Almost zero films are sold without someone recognizable in it, and it’s really tough to get any stars to even read your script, so you’re caught in a multiple catch-22 situation, unless you already know someone in the industry.
The best way “in” is to learn screenwriting WELL, write a great script that people want to make into a film, then hold it hostage until they let you direct it.
A “great idea” is not a 90 minute movie, so don’t think just because you have one, it’s going to translate into a film. Everyone in the business has heard everyone from the guy at their local 7-11, to their girlfriends mom say “hey, i have this great idea for a film”, so save your breath; nobody who matters cares at all when they hear that.
It just screams “I’m a beginner and know nothing whatsoever about making a film”.
Buy some gear and start shooting shorts. It’s the best way to learn.
Good luck.
