Q&A: Does anyone know how i can fix my Windows Movie Maker?

Question by i love vampires: Does anyone know how i can fix my Windows Movie Maker?
I have clips i put on my laptop from my camera. they only show what the camera software titled them, but i want to make a movie out of them. however, when i try to put the clips in from Movie maker, it doesnt show the files. so i have to manually find the files, and drag and drop them into my project. THEN it says this:
C:\.mov could not be imported.
it used to say someting about not having the proper codec to import the video… it said to install the right codec, and if i have already to close and restart movie maker.
i am so sick of this problem because i want to make movies and it’s been going on for like a year… PLZ HELP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! oh btw, i really dont wanna have to install something… i will if i absolutely have to, but i prefer not… if u have ANY solutions at all, plz post them. but i would appreciate if they were detailed and involved me doing something in movie maker to fix it… i have tried to download like 25 codec packages, but none of them work… even the ones off microsoft.com and all sorts of stuff that pops up when i google it… plz post links, or give me step by step instructions on how i can fix it in movie maker… i really appreciate that you would read this whole thing, and thanks for helping me! i just sit and pray and hope that it works… Oh!! i probably have to say this too… I have windows vista software on my dell 1501 inspiron laptop. I have windows movie maker 2.1 or 2.6 so if there are any programs that go for those two, i will try them, or if there’s something that i’m not doing right… i will feel like such an idiot if i didnt do anything right… and idk if its the type that the clip is… i faintly remember making one, but having to use a video converting software to make it work… i had my dad’s help because i wasn’t very good with computers… i am real PO’ed at my laptop and am about to throw it out a window if i can’t figure this out… and i really dont wanna buy anything either… 🙁 PLZ HELP ME!!! I DESPERATE!!!!!!!!!!

Actually, dear lady, you don’t need to fix Windows Movie Maker because there’s nothing wrong with it.

It doesn’t matter which codec packs you install, I’m afraid you still won’t be able to import your .mov files into it. Windows Movie Maker supports the following file types:

Audio files: .aif, .aifc, .aiff .asf, .au, .mp2, .mp3, .mpa, .snd, .wav, and .wma
Picture files: .bmp, .dib, .emf, .gif, .jfif, .jpe, .jpeg, .jpg, .png, .tif, .tiff, and .wmf
Video files: .asf, .avi, .m1v, .mp2, .mp2v, .mpe, .mpeg, .mpg, .mpv2, .wm, and .wmv

This means, I’m afraid, that you’ll need to convert your .mov files to something like .avi or .wmv. Luckily, there’s a free programme that you can download and install called Format Factory. (You can get it from the following website.)

It’s a very useful programme that can quite easily convert multiple audio, video, and picture formats.

Believe me, you won’t regret downloading this gem of a programme. I’m quite convinced that you’ll use it time after time.

Best of luck to you.
