Q&A: Do I need to get royalty rights or something in order to make and sell a craft using famous movie quotes?

Question by alicia m: Do I need to get royalty rights or something in order to make and sell a craft using famous movie quotes?
I want to make and sell a craft that has the words of famous movie quotes printed on the craft. Since I’m not using a picture of a character and not using any names do I still need to get permission, royalty rights, give a cut to someone? Where do I get info or get in touch with each movie person?

Most celebrities and Hollywood producers are registered at famousmoviequotesonhomemadecrafts.com, where you can find their cell phone numbers and work out a deal directly with them.

Fine, a serious answer: if the quote is short (say, 10 words or less, although there’s no actual numeric standard), then it counts as “fair use” under the federal copyright law, and you don’t need anyone’s permission (or have to pay anyone) to use it .
