Q&A: Anybody know of any good christmas movies?

Question by JJ72: Anybody know of any good christmas movies?
I was feeling all christmasy the other nite so I got the polar express out on dvd. Id heard good reports about it and even though it was done in some 3-d animation way, i decided to give it a go………….What a piece of crap! It was a film without a soul. Manipulative and cynical, movie making by numbers. It was like, laugh here, cry here, feel warm and nice there. Terrible and fake. And its the same for a pretty much any other christmas movie ive seen in recent times. I mean the “santa clause” was the same deal, a truly awful piece of crap, with quite possibly THE most annoying child in movie history whining his way through 90 minutes. Fake sentimentality devoid of any kind of genuine feeling.
I havent seen a good chrimbo movie in years. I think the last decent one was National lampoons christmas vacation and that was nearly 20yrs ago! So does anybody know of any good, genuine christmas movies? Films that are genuine and have a heart, but arent cynical and manipulative?

A Christmas Story~”You’ll shoot your eye out!” I think this has become the most popular holiday musical ever.

Christmas in Connecticut (original)~Barbara Stanwyck and Dennis Morgan~~There also is a TV remake.

While You Were Sleeping~Sandra Bullock and Bill Pullman

Miracle on 34th Street~I think the original b&w is the best, but some like the theatrical remake; there’s also a TV movie.

It’s a Wonderful Life~James Stewart and Donna Reed

Scrooge!~This is a wonderful musical starring Albert Finney as Scrooge.

Scrooge (1951)~This version is considered to be the best version of :A Christmas Carol”. Alastair Sim plays Scrooge, and he’s the biggest draw for the film.

A Christmas Carol (1938)~This is another popular version of the story.

The Nightmare Before Christmas~Everyone seems to agree that Tim Burton’s film is brilliant marketing: equally watchable at Halloween and for Christmas.

Jingle All the Way~I didn’t expect to like this one, but it’s very cute and sweet, with fathers competing for the toy both of their little boys want. It’s goofy at times, but it didn’t irritate me, which is a good sign. *giggle*

I’ll Be Home for Christmas~This is another one that I didn’t expect to like, with Jonathan Taylor Thomas as a self-centered college kid who will earn a car if he gets home to spend Christmas with his family. There are some funny situations and a bit of heart-tugging occasionally.

How the Grinch Stole Christmas~TV special and movie

Heidi~Shirley Temple’s version is manipulative but good, one of the better versions of this well-known story. I don’t recall how much of it is at Christmastime, but there’s plenty of snow.

It’s a TV special, but “The Best Christmas Pageant Ever” is funny and touching. A woman’s plans to conduct the pageant go awry when she ends up with a bunch of children best described as hellions. The children, who have never been near a church before, come up with some outrageous notions for the play.

Prancer
This 1989 film is the story of a young motherless girl who finds a wounded reindeer in the woods and believing him to be Prancer, one of Santa’s reindeer, lovingly nurses him back to health in hopes of returning him to his place on Santa’s sleigh by Christmas eve. Sam Elliott is the father who comes to believe in his daughter’s mission. It will warm your heart and lift your spirits.

Except for the Grinch movie, I think everything is older. You’re right about what they’ve been doing to Christmas movies~”Bad Santa”, “Fred Clause” and other horrors. I know that Lifetime and a couple of other channels generally air their TV movies throughout the season; I’ll try to find a list since some of them to go to DVD. I’m sorry that I couldn’t help you much. There aren’t a lot of good Christmas movies out there.
