Pushy Parents?

Question by Sid: Pushy Parents?
I have pushy parents. I want to pursue a career in filmmaking, but my parents want me to become a doctor, because they think it’s the “safe” path in life. I really want to make movies, but they say I won’t be successful. I can’t secretly apply for USC when I’m 17 and they’ll deny me ANTHING that I can possibly boost my resume with. They’re even already taking steps for me to be a doctor (they signed me up for a PSAT resume program for UCI, the best med school in southern California). I know they just want me to be successful, but i know there’s more to life than money. What should I do?

Quite frankly both those routes are difficult. I heard a statistic once that 1/3 of people in pre-med are smart enough, 1/3 have the people skills it takes to be a doctor and only 1/3 have both and are able to be a doctor.

I don’t see anything “safe” about being a doctor. I guess I agree with you. Do the filmaking, follow your heart, you’ll be able to have more control over your future in that route.
