Movie Trailers… what is the process for producing one?

Question by Aubrey: Movie Trailers… what is the process for producing one?
Does the editor of the movie trailer get to watch the movie way in advance so he/she can make a good preview for viewers? I’d imagine you’d have to know the movie really well to make a trailer but you see trailers months before the movie even comes out.
