Making a film at home?

best home movie making software

Question by msett: Making a film at home?
My friends and I will be making a movie at home this summer. I want it to be really good and suspensful, something provocative and gripping. I’m writing the screenplay. What will I need?

Please help on as many as you can:

What kind of camera will be best? HD is nice. What’s the cheapest I can get?
What kind of post-production after effect stuff should I purchase? What is the price?
Do I need any special software or is Windows Movie Maker sufficent?
Anything else I should know before heading out to make my home movie?
Also, is there a software that enables you to place words on the screen while there is a moving image behind it. In other words, can I make it look like a real movie and have the titles appearing and disapperaing smoothly as the movie starts?

Seeing as you have never tried it before, it would not be worth spending over £100 on video editing software.
You will be able to edit the video in windows movie maker. You can put titles and words in. I can’t remember if you can overlay text as the video is showing…but you might be able to..if not it will display a screen with text, and then video or vice versa.
It might be worth trying to see what you can do with whatever camera you already have, like a digital still camera (they can usually take videos). Don’t shoot the movie with it as the resolution will be low, but try editing etc.
HD is nice yes…
I use a regular old camcorder (canon MVX460 I think) and get these kind of videos:

My friend has an older version of the camera (about 5 years old) and it’s used in some of the vids on there.
Remember it is on youtube and quality is lost greatly on here. The picture quality on the original is just like looking at normal TV footage. £300 would get you a good looking image from a camera.
