Is “Coraline” supposed to be like Alice in wonderland?

Question by : Is “Coraline” supposed to be like Alice in wonderland?
I re-watched the movie a few weeks ago, and just realized that that movie is like a dark version of Alice in wonderland. Because the plot is: a young girl falls asleep, and then follows a white fluffy animal down a dark hole, and ends up in a dream land. She meets a talking cat without a name (Whybie’s cat/Cheshire cat), a deceptively evil ruler (Other mother/Queen of hearts/Jabberwocky), a mad man with a mouse and a hat (other world Mr. Bobo/Mad Hatter), and a pair of bickering twins (The circus acrobat twins/Tweedledee and Tweedledum). There are a few others in there, but I can’t think of anything right now. So I was wondering if the parallels were intentional, or if I was making something out of nothing?

I’m not sure. Possibly. “Coraline” is originally a novel by Neil Gaiman.
