I like making home movies but I’m afraid if I ask my college mates to help & be in them they’ll laugh at me?

Question by James: I like making home movies but I’m afraid if I ask my college mates to help & be in them they’ll laugh at me?
Would it be different if we were on a Film Studies course or Drama course? Would they then be up for it whereas the people on the Music course I’m currently doing would laugh and find it immature?

Perhaps it would generally help if I say me AND my mate are doing it, since my best mate is always up for it.
I mean I was thinking remaking Rebel Without A Cause, and possibly The Blob, but particularly what I always wanted to do was a biopic about Osama Bin Laden…and I’ve finally decided that it’s actually possible to pull off…I mean friends will react to that weirdly

Hey, if they laugh they’ll be missing out. Everyone likes making movies tho, and your friends are prob no different. The thing to ask is what kind of movie are you making, and then: do you need “actors” who will “work” for you. In other words, will you friends think it’s just kinda fun, and then 1 hour in, or when the fun turns to work, will they bail?

As you are already in college, the best bet would be to place a notice on the Theatre Department’s board. A call for actors for a rough cut movie. Let them know where your experience is. If this is a 1st attempt, let em know. This way the actors are prepared for what is going to be asked of them. And if this is a 1st try, then you should attract actors who are excited about experimenting.

Remember, a 1st attempt at movie making is all about the learning process. There are many many things you will discover you never know before about sight lines, crossing the axis, continuity, etc.

The most important tho, is to have fun. Create something!
