How to turn a book into a movie?

Question by jamesvjose: How to turn a book into a movie?
I just read Megan Meade’s Guide to the McGowan boys and just think it would make the most fantastic chick flick. I really want to e-mail someone or want someone to make a movie out of it. Any ideas????????/

Option the rights to develop it into a film from the author or publisher (whoever owns the book). That takes money, and is the first step of producing a film. Yay, you’re a producer.

Then get the screenplay written. Then, either sell the screenplay to someone who will make the movie, or make it yourself – obtain informal agreements with the director, the principal actors, and the financiers. Take it to a studio or other potential financier and potentially help with distribution (pre-sales). Finalize the screenplay to the agreement of all stakeholders — the exclusivity of the option allows this step without risk of a rival attempt to produce the same property. Then thank me when you win that Oscar.
