what kind of animation? 3D or cartoonish?

Adobe flash and photoshop are useful for cartoonish and simple things…
autodesk maya is VERY expensive (photoshop and flash are also expensive) and is used by professionals to make movies like shrek, kung fu panda, transformers 3D animated special effects, etc…
