How much research do people put into their beliefs?

Question by Brynkebab: How much research do people put into their beliefs?
Hey – I just wanted to know about what people do to make these big decision (in the R&S field). I have frequented the R&S forums a little lately and am so surprised at people’s lack of knowledge about things! I know that may sound a little rude (sorry!), and I am totally NOT against people asking questions/making comments on Religion and Spirituality but to use an example – I wouldn’t want to go on a Cooking forum, having done some sketchy research and make huge claims about fundamentals of cooking! I would much rather ask questions, present views (in a non-offensive way) and hopefully get some helpful feedback!

In so many of these questions I read of people questioning things like Jesus’ existence, claiming he is a fictional character based on other mythology (namely Horus) and a multitude of other HUGE claims. I’ve had things like movies referenced as people’s source for why they believe things (in which case I might start freaking out right now because of the movie 2012! Arghhh!).

I’m sorry, but I’m assuming everyone here is adults? (or late teens?). Can we please have some adult conversations and not just this constant trolling and hollow-claims?

I know exactly the dangers of ignorant and stubborn belief, so that is why I’m dedicating my life to seeking out the truth. As a Christian I don’t want to believe “just cause it feels right” but because I’ve rationally thought it out and come to certain conclusions. Opinionated discussion does have it’s place but when the issue of eternity is what is at stake, may we all swallow our ego’s (me included) and talk things through intelligently?
Thanks for the replies guys!

@Araymage Great response! Would you be able to link me to somewhere where it says how Josephus is discredited? I am aware of the Christian forgeries within Josephus’ documents but from my research it appears that only fragments of the document (those which were most likely the additions of Christians) were discredited, and not his whole text, which still confirms the existence of Jesus. I am also aware of the lack of first hand accounts on Jesus but have you looked into how they critique the Bible as a historical document? Historians take into account other factors to determine the credibility of the Bible and therefore determine the likeliness of it’s fabrication. Also, have you looked into Oral Tradition much? Surely as Oral Tradition was the preferred method of retaining/passing on info in that time it clearly explains why there aren’t first hand accounts written down? Instead they took several decades until it was seen necessary to be put in writing…
@jupiteress
I’m sorry if this came across as being offensive, but I think you’ve shown in your own response that you value a well thought out answer! (not just some abuse or something)….
