How is movie revenue calculated?

Question by lildemocrat86: How is movie revenue calculated?
Is the amount paid per ticket calculated what gets counted when determining the box office success, or is it just what the film actually makes? For instance, with the cost of tickets going up, would it be more likely that a new movie finds more success than an old one? Would 3D movies end up making more money because it costs more per ticket to see it in 3D? There are also some places, like Warren Theaters (http://www.warrentheatres.com/), that charge more for balcony seating.
