How do you persuade others?

Question by Katelyn: How do you persuade others?
I work at a movie theater and recently my boss says the per cap is down on days that I work. It is not entirely my fault because they always schedule me on the slowest days of the week. He said to work on trying to upgrade orders and to make people buy hot dogs and stuff like that. What can I say to get the customer on a personal level with me? What kinds of questions should I ask them? If you have any techniques with this please share them it is greatly appreciated!

First and foremost, be friendly! People are more likely to want to buy things from you if you are really nice and sweet. And don’t forget to SMILE!! 🙂

Next, take the “you want fries with that?” approach. That is, if you have a customer that buys popcorn, ask them if they want a drink or candy to go with it automatically. NEVER say “is that all” or anything along those lines because then you’re shutting them off from potentially buying more things. When you ask them if they would like anything else, make sure you ask them if they want specific items (would you like an ICEE with that? would you like any candy? Our hot dogs are fresh off the…whatever hot dogs are fresh off of..would you like to try one? etc…)

Lastly, if your theater has specials on the bigger sizes of the products, mention it to the customers. A lot of times if you buy the large popcorn or drink, then you get free refills. This is often enough to persuade people to want to buy the bigger size, which means more money for your theater. 🙂
