how do you burn dvds so that they work on normal dvd players?

Question by smokesha: how do you burn dvds so that they work on normal dvd players?
I should be able to use my dvd burning software. but what file formats will play on a normal dvd player. I know there are now some that play mp4 but mine doesn’t. it doesn’t see any of the formats i have. avi, mpeg, xvid, etc.
I remember when I had to make my mp3s into WAV files so it would play on a normal CD player. But that doesn’t seem to be the same thing. Is it an ISO file maybe? do I gotta make my movies into an ISO file? I don’t think I know how to do that. or is there a DVD equivalent to ISO files for CDs. How would I make a menu for the DVD player to go to and include it in the ISO file?
Or am I way off here? Do I need to buy more software for this? I program that makes menues and chapter selections and into a format that DVD players recognize?

You need a double layered DVD burner, which is quite expensive. There are certain DVDs out there, (like the ones you watch on TV!) that are double layered for more capacity. Just eBay “double layered DVD burner” or have someone else put one in for you.
