Help with video editing?

Question by Big J 619: Help with video editing?
For a project I need to make a video on how to do something and record it, I already have it recorded. I used the schools flip which kinda sucks but I’m not a video person so I don’t have any cameras or anything. I’m good with computers but I’ve never done video editing so I’m having some trouble. After researching video editing software I hear the windows movie maker is the best free software out there, I did download one called virtual dub or something in case the windows one sucks but I like the windows one. I put all the segments together but I need help putting transitions in so it looks better, the video is at about 8 minutes and I want it to be around 4, to make it shorter because everything I do doesn’t need to be played at actual speed and I want it to fit into a 4 minute song. I tried moving the speed for a clip to 2x but it just plays really choppy, is there a problem here or is it my laptop, I have an acer aspire 5515, 3gb of ram but only 1.6 ghz single core, but it does play videos pretty well as long as they aren’t over 720p, I’m not sure what the filp recorded at but at regular speed it plays fine so that’s not the problem. Will the video play at twice the speed smoothly ir will I just have to keep cutting out pieces to get it down to 4 mins. Any help would be appreciated, thank you.
I’d rather use windows live movie maker because I put the videos on it before I asked the question and it takes a while to prepare the video to edit (atleast on my laptop because of the processor) I’m just having trouble with speeding up certain parts smoothly and need transitions, I’m gonna put music over it too but it seems pretty simple from what I’ve seen in the program.
