Just 24 hours after being told jobs were on the line – talks between unions and management are continuing at the West Lothian meat processing plant. The Dutch company Vion says the Halls factory in Broxburn is unsustainable. The Scottish Government has set up a task force to try to save the plant. While parts of Scotland have recorded one of their wettest Junes on record, the Western Isles are facing the worst drought in living memory. Islanders are now being told to conserve water, while forest and moorland fires have sprung up across the islands. The man behind what could be one of the greatest scientific discoveries of our age today remained modest about his chances of receiving a nobel prize. Professor Peter Higgs has been tipped for the honour after scientists in Switzerland said they may have discovered the elusive God Particle. A new centre named after the physicist is now to be opened in Edinburgh in the hope of making the next big scientific breakthrough. West Lothian singing sensation Susan Boyle has been given an honorary doctorate for her contribution to the creative industries. She was given the degree by Edinburgh’s Queen Margaret University, where she once studied for a certificate in caring. Parking in the capital’s city centre is to be free after 5 o’clock during the Edinburgh Festival.
