Asus Cultural and Education Foundation recently held a short documentary competition, featuring inspirational stories from the people of Taiwan. A college student in Taichung County won first place with a story about his father; let’s take a look. At four in the morning, Zhang Guoshu drives his truckful of vegetables to a market in Taichung, to sell them; then, as the morning market concludes around noon, he next sets off for an evening market at three, to sell some more. He barely makes 30 USD a day for his hard work, but Zhang pushes on in order to pay his son’s tuition. Zhang Yousheng’s father, Zhang Guoshu: Money is hard to come by. I have a son. I need to conserve it, to look after him. I need to improve my living standards, and help my son as well. Studying is not easy. To honor his father’s love, Zhang Yousheng decided to make a documentary about his father’s life. 2010 Asus Documentary Award winner, Zhang Yousheng: When I was little, I didn’t know how hard it was for my dad to make money. I would always just ask for an allowance. Now I know he really doesn’t make much, and yet still he willingly supports me. To properly document his father, Zhang Yousheng spent a month drafting an script.
