I read somewhere on the internet to use a women’s stocking and stretch it over your camera lense in order to get a “movie feel” camera filter. Would this actually work? Does anyone know of some other techniques that will make an ordinary camera not look like mom and dads home videos?

Yes, play, play, play. Depends on how you use the filter. Experiment to get the look you want, or even a look you didn’t know you wanted. Also try Vaseline or a mesh-type cloth.
