To do the animation, character articulations and lighting, Pixar mainly uses a proprietary application called Marionette. It’s been described as a stripped down version of Maya (which they also use in places) with basic rendering features but greater character-based control than Maya. Marionette is not available for sale.

For modeling and rendering, Pixar uses RenderMan, its in-house software which is also available for sale to the public. RenderMan was created early in Pixar’s history when it was more a software company than a production company, but the software’s development has continued alongside the company’s more popular entertainment arm.
