Very rough test of Mission Control scene for the film “O2”

When we were developing “O2” the original script was set in the present time and had a Mission Control scene. We didn’t have the time or budget to develop a set so I downloaded a couple pictures of NASA’s Mission Control and used an old software application called “Canoma” to generate a 3D projection from the photos. To test the concept I composited Blaine into one of the flight control stations and also in the foreground behind a virtual window. Notice how the camera cranes slowly and the image projects in true 3D. This is the quick and dirty test we did of the concept (total time devoted was 6 hours including shooting Blaine). Based on this test we knew we could pull this off (we’d have to replace several of the screens with animated images and planned to composite in a few more live controllers to sell the shot.) However, when we obtained the Spaceship Set at Laurel Canyon Studios we had to shift the time setting further in the future and decided to dump the mission control scene altogether.
