Two New Actors Fight for the Girl in ‘Red Riding Hood’

You won’t believe…
making a good movie

I don’t have photos of me and Grampa Swimelar in Norfolk, and he wasn’t usually there. But he maybe got a furlough because of Gramma’s death.
He took me on many walks to visit her grave, then we walked across a railroad bridge to see a cable ride that local kids made:

You are looking at a sketch on a post-it and a drawing on a napkin at the Palomar.
It may be hard to figure out the picture because the idea is so odd:
Yes, you are looking at a double bed mattress, laying on two greased cables, slung between trees. Yes, you are.
The cables were quite heavy- 3/4 inch or 1 inch. must have been hell to get them up there. These had to be high school kids to manage that. Confidence was high.

When I was a teen-ager, I reminded Grampa ( who was now in Seattle ) about those walks. It meant alot to him that the walks had made such an impression.

I remember getting a ride on the thing- even the awkward transition from the tree limb to the mattress- but i would have pictured riding on it.
It is probably a memory-movie I made up. *

___
* – i also have a memory of everyone listening to radio after Peal Harbor, but I may- again- have only heard about it and made a memory-movie.
When I told Anna Weeg this story at Coffeetopia, I said I may have built a dramatic mental image, because I pictured the radio on an end table in the middle of the living room- and at night.
But, she said the radio might have been moved there for the occasion, so that people could sit around it for something so important.
First announcements of the attack in Norfolk would have been around 3pm. Sunset in December in Norfolk is about 5 pm. So the memory of the radio scene in the dark comes into question. No telling at this point. For sure, it makes a better movie.
It was fun to go over this with Anna’s help, in 2009.
