Tips On Making Your Fanfic Characters Less Mary-Sueish?

Question by Mama Umbridge ☆★☆: Tips On Making Your Fanfic Characters Less Mary-Sueish?
I have an original fanfic character right now called Lucinda, in the Harry Potter universe. I know the plot has been overdone, but basically she’s a fan of the HP books/movies and one day she is sucked into that world.

Ever since I had a Mary-Sue character a couple of years ago, I’ve always obsessed over whether they’re Sueish or not. This character is a young girl, starting off the story about eleven years old, with blonde hair and brown eyes. Originally, she was orphaned and then adopted, though it doesn’t serve any purpose in the actual story and I guess I could just drop it. When she is in the HP universe, everyone thinks she is a bit of a weirdo, mainly because she appears in the middle of the Great Hall with Muggle clothing and no shoes on. She tells no-one but Dumbledore her secret, and resolves not to change the course of the story (since she appears in Harry’s first year). However, after the first year or so, she accidentally breaks her resolve, and the timeline begins to go astray.

To be honest, I see her as a bit of a Sue, and I was wondering if anyone had any tips on making her less Sueish? Also could you tell me if the plot sounds interesting or not? Thanks for any help 🙂

That will help with your Mary Sue issue. As for your plot, I can’t comment on it because it’s a fanfic and I don’t like fanfics.
