Question by : Short Film Making Tips?
I’m trying out for a film school, and they need to see some of my movies. so i decided to direct one with my family. I’m working on the script now, and will be filming and directing it. Any tips how to make it really creative and original? Or just tips on how to make it good?

Remember that film is a visual medium. If you’re trying out for film school, show off visual prowess. Try certain camera angles. Experiment with black and white. A script is nice, but one of the first things you learn is how to tell a story without dialogue. Same with screenwriting. You must learn how to tell a story without words.

Embrace simplicity. One thing that kills me is how eager some kids are to be another Hitchcock or Cameron. Be yourself. You don’t have to go over the top. A good film knows when to be subtle or when to be thrilling.

Experiment. If you’re applying for a school, don’t be afraid to experiment, even if it doesn’t go well. The school isn’t expecting you to be perfect at entry, but trying something different will catch their attention.

Write about something you care about. It is incentive for you to produce something entertaining and you’ll put more effort into the finished product.

WATCH movies. Learn from what you see. Don’t copy, but expand. Improve. And make it your own.

Have fun. Why go into film if you can’t enjoy yourself? (8^)
