Resident Evil films need a reboot?

Question by thenatureboy08: Resident Evil films need a reboot?
I recently read the full interview with one of the developers of recently released Resident Evil 5. Many fans love the game, while simultaniously saying that though they love the latest incarnation, it has strayed away from what made the franchise the legend it is today…..it’s not scary anymore.

Fans are very aware that the games are much more action based, and there isn’t really that element of helplessness, scarcity of supplies, and sense of exploration in the midst of lurking evil, that coined the now infamous “Survival Horror” genre.

Much of this can be chalked up to advances in technology, and with that, the scares and sense of helplessness can be attributed to genuinely scary foes now (that you’ll actually need plenty of ammo for). With this, however, Capcom is supposedly planning a reboot for Resident Evil 6. Now, whether or not this is a reboot in the vein of RE4 from RE3, or a reboot like Platinum Dunes did with the new Friday the 13th film is uncertain.

With that being said, I personally HAAAAATE the Resident Evil films. I don’t quite understand why the developers of the game don’t just make the movie, or why Capcom gives the ‘ok’ to Sony to make this crap with the ‘RE’ title on it.

If you have great source material, why not just stick to it? I look at a film like ‘Sex in the City’, based off of the critically acclaimed series on HBO. Now, these women have been doing their thing in NYC for, idk, 6 or 7 seasons, yet make a movie following up that series….and BAM, they make an awesome movie, make millions of dollars, and the fans are happy. They didn’t change the characters, but use similar scenarios, with hints of the original series thrown in to let you know it’s a Sex in the City movie. They didn’t switch things up for the individuals that have never watch the show, but stayed true to what made the show so successful…and in turn, the movie was successful; not just box office wise, but people who did not watch the show, were easily drawn into the story, and left the theater with some sense of understanding of what just happened (as well as an idea of what the history was between the characters in the film).

It seems like a no brainer, but the film industry seems to want to take liberties. I can understand with games like “Super Mario Bros.”, “Double Dragon”, and “Street Fighter”, as the characters themselves may have *some* history, but not enough continuity to make a cohesive, hour+ film. Resident Evil, on the other hand, has background, a rich, unfolding story, memorable characters, and a built-in fan base.

So why alter that, and give us these films: Racoon City, but none of the people in Racoon City we expect to be there; remove great characters we all know, and give us superhero Alice; take the Grand Daddy of Survival Horror games, and remove the element of survival and the horror of being human amidst the undead?

What are your takes on this, cause i’m disgusted. Hands Down. Do you feel that the Resident Evil film series needs a reboot?
No, it doesn’t really make me wonder about anything. I mean, yea, the movies are successful in making lots of money…but i believe they could still make lots of cash if they made the movie, and made it more representative of the title that it carries.

I feel like the changes are solely made to make money. These film studios like screen gems follow the rubric to make money; the same rubric that Underworld uses. Same thing, different women, different bad guys, but same thing. At least with Underworld, it’s a stand alone title.

So no, it’s not suprising at all. I just wish they could try to include the “die hard” fans of the series as well. I mean, they could make the movie that we ALL want to see, and still be entertaining for people who never played the games. And I understand that you may love the movies and that you’ve never played the games. I guess that kinda bugs me cause i love the games, but miss out on enjoying the movies. Like it’s a downfall i played the games
I feel you Kayreo, and i understand your dad’s point of view. I had a lot of friends who were like that when we went to see the first RE film.

When we left the theater, they were like “man, that movie was awesome,” and wanted to know when the game was coming out. I laughed, and said “yo, you do realize the game came out first right?” They didn’t know that, and I told them that the game that i was playing at my boy’s house a couple days earlier (we had a party there), was Resident Evil.

They were stunned, and asked why was the game so far off from the movie, right…so then i told them the game has been out, and this movie came way after that. Then they realized all the stuff that was changed and/or left out for the film. Then their facial expressions changed and said “well that sucks, cause the game was cool.”

They went back and got into the story, and now they can’t watch the movies….they say the movie seems retarded to them now. Just a personal experience.

I feel the Resident Evil film series shouldn’t have been created in the first place. It’s awful. A reboot is a terrible idea.
