Q&A: Windows Movie Maker and MPEG-2 problem?

Question by Sandra: Windows Movie Maker and MPEG-2 problem?
I just found out that WMM doesn’t support video format Mpeg-2 ie. from a Sony Handycam. It let me import a video once and it kept stalling and freezing. Now, it won’t even let me import stating a message like this “C:\Documents and Settings\My Name\My Documents\My Videos-21-2009090921171913.mpg could not be imported. An interface has too many methods to fire events from”

I’m not computer savvy but is there a way to work with this? I don’t want to buy a movie making software when Windows XP has one built right in. I had no problem using it with my Sony digital camera but with the camcorder, it won’t let me import.

I want to work with the camcorder because it gives more flexibility with zooming etc to make better home movies.

Should the videos be converted to another format (and I don’t know how to do that) in order to be able to work with WMM?

Thanks.
I should mention that my camcorder is a Sony DCR-SR47

Thank you to everyone for responding so quickly. I really appreciate it. I will try these suggestions.

It sounds like it does not like the MPG format (Codec) maybe this can help.

go to www.free-codecs.com and download a codec pack, left hand side about half way down the page. there is one called XP use that it probably have the right one for you. If that does not work then you may need to convert the video, it will be quite fast as you are only going to convert the video back into another MPG.

there are a load here many are free

Good luck
