Q&A: Why are some people so defensive about the musical Wicked?

Question by Golden Bunny: Why are some people so defensive about the musical Wicked?
According to an interview, the author of Wicked, Gregory Maguire loved the show and has claimed that the film will be out in 2014 or 2013 for it’s big 10th anniversary celebration and he says it should be just as magical. I think it would be fab as I am a big Wicked fan!
But I went onto Wicked website forums and there was this big argument in a debate that some people moaned and said there should not be a Wicked film because it would “ruin it”. How would it ruin it?? The special effects and choreography would still be the same and Stephen Schwartz would still be the composer and Universal has the rights so what makes people think in their mind that a stage musical transformed into a film would ruin it? It doesn’t make any difference! And the other people who did want a film said that it’s too late because Maguire had already claimed that there is going to be one. And it would make it even more popular with it’s audience because it would be a sell-out and box office hit from around the world.
I don’t understand why people should be so over-defensive. Maguire knows what he’s doing so Wicked won’t be a flop as a movie! I only hope that it would be as good and they work hard on it and hopefully it will succeed. I don’t say “God no! They’ll ruin it!” that’s basically judging all musicals into films and vice-versa!

People have made these statements about various shows made into films, getting defensive saying “No! It’ll ruin the whole thing!” But what they don’t realise is that they find out they’re wrong. Most musical shows that have been made into musical films have passed the grade and done exceptionally well! Grease was a Broadway show before it became a film, Sound of Music, Annie, Hairspray, West Side Story, My Fair Lady, I could go on. All those films have succeded.
I remember many people were defensive about The Lion King saying that bringing it onto Broadway would ruin the whole effect of the film. They were so wrong. It had rave reviews and was a sell-out hit. I thought it was a lot better than the film to be honest!

All I can say is I hope Wicked would just be as magical both on screen and stage. Also a special effects on a camera enchance the production. Like if Harry Potter was a 3d stage show they won’t be able to do the Chess Board very well or the Quidditch game.
On these occasions, films are better, but others shows are better.

People have been wrong before about making assumptions to stage musicals so why do they do it again if they hear that it would be a movie?
I love Wicked and I’m looking forward to the film when it comes out. I hope they’ll try hard and that’s all I can say!

Well, i think some people (im a huge wicked fan, too) think it would take the magic away from what the show. And you have to admit, there is nothing like live theatre. Also some people are so “protevtive” of it they are afraid that if it was a movie everyone would be singing the songs and claiming they are “experts”
