Q&A: what should i pursue in college if i want to get into film-making?

Question by Kelsey S: what should i pursue in college if i want to get into film-making?
specifically what college courses are available and what would they be called. Film studies? or should i look for something else, it seems like ‘film studies’ pertain less to film-making and more to criticism (and liberal arts). specifically i would like the possibility to make lower-end documentaries (something like 180 degrees south if anyone is aware of that movie). i dont want to go big but i would like the opportunity to make a living seeing the world through a camera. i am still in high school as a sophomore and plan to go to college in my home-state of new york if you know of any specific schools in the area and the courses they offer. i plan on doing a ton of research on the subject but don’t know where to start, any help would be appreciated.

i have no intrest in engineering, and i dont plan on selling myself out like you suggest.
im only asking for a simple basis to start research on “possible” careere though. nothing is final. please dont answer without reading the details, it doesnt help
oh, and im talking something more along the line of going out to film documentaries, not neccesarily directing/producing them. though the opportunity would be nice
