Q&A: How do I rip DVDs onto my external hard drive (a couple of questions, please)?

Question by muchluv4pets: How do I rip DVDs onto my external hard drive (a couple of questions, please)?
Maybe I’m making this way more complicated than it should be, but I wanted to rip all of my dvds onto a hard drive I just purchased and send it to my husband who is deployed. I was told I needed to download the following software (which I did): CloneDVD, PowerISO, FLV Player, ImgBurn, and DVD Shrink. I was also told I wouldn’t have to do anything once I installed the programs, and that whenever I put in a dvd the programs needed would automatically open and run. So I did all that, installed the external hard drive (which is a WD My Book Essential Edition 2.0, 750 GB). There is no manual that came with the XHD, all it said was that it will install itself and be ready for use. I have never done anything like this before. I put a dvd into my disk drive and all the computer’s doing is bringing up windows media player like I want to watch the dvd. How can I rip all of my dvds onto the XHD? I think I have a little over 100 dvds total.

Also is there a way I can separate all the movies into categories such as comedy, horror, etc. or will they all just be mixed up together?

Is there a way to condense each movie so that I can fit more onto the XHD without sacrificing quality?

Any other pertinent info would be greatly appreciated also.
Thanks so much.
