Q&A: Help with a life decision?

Question by yehudy b: Help with a life decision?
Hey whats up. My name is John and I am a senior in High school. For years now I have been contemplating on what I want to be. I came up with two career choices that I would really be passionate about. I want to a film maker more specifically a film director and a graphic designer. I am torn and as the time for me to go off to college draws near, I feel its time a make a decision. I really want to be a film maker. I have great ideas that would make amazing movies. I feel I can really contribute to cinema. I dream about winning Academy Awards every night and when I watch an enjoyable movie an unexplainable feeling of joy consumes me. On the other hand Graphic design is my mistress. I love her and when I feel her warm embrace the world seem unreal to me. I know how to draw and I believe I have an exceptional eye for design. Film making is what I was born to do but Graphic design is what I want to do.
I am a really bright kid with a 5.2 gpa and want to got to either Columbia University, NYU, UCLA, or USC. All these schools named have excellent film programs but horrible design options.
What should I do.
Should I become one of the greatest Film makers of my generation or become the Di Vinci of Graphic Design.
Based on your expertise which one it better and would make me more successful and is there a way I can be both without spending the next 40 years of my life in college.

I would say graphic design. You’ll be struggling to start out in film making, and to make it as big as Spielberg, will not only take a lot of time, effort, and patience, it’s also a long shot. Unfortunately, you have a better chance at being a decent graphic designer and getting a decent paying job at some company that can use those services.
