Q&A: Computer engineer or software engineer?

Question by Cute: Computer engineer or software engineer?
Hey Guys,
This is my first year at college, and now i have to make a decision whether to study computer engineer or software engineer. I don’t know which job is more powerful. You know what i mean. I really don’t want to pick a job that is lower than another job. I heard that computer engineer is better than software engineer, but i really don’t know if i like computer engineer. What should i do? —- This is what i want to learn and do on the future.
Programming
Network Security (Work for big companies)
Web developing (Also making websites)

Which job would suit me?

And by the way i really love making movies ( i also want to be a film maker), but because i live in Michigan and they don’t have film schools as i heard, so i decided to go for computers. I want to be able to make visual effects for movies and stuff like that. By the way, right now i live in Michigan and i will transfer to UFM (University of Michigan).

So as i said, i don’t know whether to go for computer engineer or software engineer. (and i love movies too)

So let me tell you what i did when i was in high school maybe that will help you answer my question:
In 9th grade i started to make programs as a hobby. The first year i struggled and i really didn’t like it. I don’t know what happen, i just saw myself in love with programming. Even though in my school they didn’t teach my any programming, i was able to learn by myself. I used to make any program that comes to my mind. Of course it would take me longer, but i always made the program i wanted to make. However, in my senior year i started making movies and stuff like that. First the movies weren’t very good, but i kept going. Now i make movies and i add some special effects to them (visual effects) and the movies look really good. A lot of people tell me i am doing a good job. Now sometimes when i program i can’t stop, i keep programming and i feel so happy. Sometime even when i have a test, i just keep programming, because it gives me pleasure. The same thing with movies, i keep making movies and i have fun. Right now i don’t know what myself want. Computer filed or Film Filed. None of my family are in the Film Filed which slows me down. One of my brother is a computer engineer and the other software engineer. I don’t know which major to go to, i mean i can follow their steps and become something in computers, but in the film filed, i don’t know who to follow and i live in Michigan. This state focus on engineering stuff, not movies.

The reason i can’t choose a major, because i fear to fail. I don’t want to pick something, and later on realize this is now what i wanted!

If you are in my situation what will you do?

My own experience. If you really like coding and creating new stuff, go for software engineer. If you like opeartions, configurations and networking, go for computer engineer. No matter job you choose, it is your capability to decide how much you will make, not the major.

It simply depends on your personal interests. If you are not sure at this moment, simply choose software engineer (programming is very helpful for computer engineer too) to build your coding skills. If you find out you do not like it, then switch to computer engineer. Coding is the foundation of computer science.

I was in your situation before when I pursued Ph.D in California. A few months I decided to change from engineering to business :-). Let your interests guide you.
