public screening of independent movie?

Question by kaz: public screening of independent movie?
If someone makes an independent movie and sells a DVD of it to a person who then wants to use it to screen it at public events, can the creator ask for payment for those screenings? or object to the screenings of his/her movie? they were not told at the time that the buyer would do that, there was no contract. even if the don’t charge for tickets they do benefit in some way since they are an organization trying to justify money being used for the arts in the area.

also, the movie was a premiere at a film festival as a premiere with permission from creator. it was a winner and there is no mention of the fest and the people who promoted and helped the movie get publicized.
kindly answer the question if you can, do not advertise products.
